__From Genesis to Revelation, generosity is a central theme throughout the Bible. In Romans 6:23, we find the ultimate example of generosity: *“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”*__

As children of a generous God, Christians are called to reflect His generosity in their lives. The Bible offers a rich tapestry of teachings on generosity. For instance, Jesus instructed His followers to share with those in need, saying, *“Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise”* (Luke 3:10–11).

The Apostle Paul encourages us to give from the heart, not out of obligation: *“Give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver”* (2 Corinthians 9:7). Psalm 112 goes even further by equating generosity with righteousness, showing it as a reflection of godly character.

Throughout history, godly men and women have offered profound wisdom about the importance of generosity. These insights continue to inspire believers to live generously, not as a duty but as a joyful response to God’s love.

10 Inspiring Quotes on Generosity

__The so-called “bucket strategy” is one of several approaches for drawing money from an investment portfolio in retirement. It is promoted as especially helpful for managing “sequence of returns risk,” which is the possibility that a bear market could hit right around your retirement date. If that were to happen, it could significantly decrease how much you could take from your portfolio without threatening your portfolio’s longevity.__

Here’s the general idea. After determining your living expenses and how much income you will have from other sources, you then see how much money you will need to take from your investment portfolio each year. For example, if your living expenses are $80,000 per year and $60,000 is covered by Social Security and other sources (perhaps a defined-benefit pension and some part-time work), you need $20,000 per year from your investment portfolio.

You then put $40,000 to $60,000 of your portfolio in a money market fund or similarly safe, liquid investment. This is your cash bucket. All the rest is invested for growth. Some recommend three buckets, with bucket number two still invested *somewhat* conservatively and bucket three invested more aggressively.

In a bear market, you draw what you need from the cash bucket, thereby avoiding taking money from investments that are in decline. You continue doing so until those investments have recovered. When the money in buckets two and three perform well, you draw what you need from them while also topping off the cash bucket.

This all sounds well and good, especially for investors on the more conservative side of the risk tolerance spectrum. However, lots of questions begin to emerge when you look at this approach more closely and try to execute the strategy. And that’s where you come in. If you currently use some form of the bucket strategy, how would you answer the following questions? Or, if you’re not yet retired but are planning to use the bucket strategy, how would you answer?

__When to fill the cash bucket__

Do you begin filling the cash bucket several years before your planned retirement date or do you wait until you retire? Filling the cash bucket before retirement would seem to be the safer route, but if the market is doing well in the lead-up to retirement, that would lower your portfolio’s returns.

__Where to keep the money in your cash bucket__

How much risk are you willing to take with this bucket? If peace of mind is the main goal, you would probably want zero risk, leading you to a money market mutual fund or high-yield savings account. These days, you may be able to get 4%, but what about when the risk-free rate is much lower? Would you consider using a short-term bond fund? Something else?

__How to manage the buckets__

This is where the rubber really meets the road. There are lots of options here, with much depending on the performance of buckets two and three, and also how long a bear market drags on. Again, since peace of mind is the main goal, being guided by trustworthy rules would seem to be very beneficial.

Some suggest a rebalancing approach. For example, if the portfolio starts out at 50/40/10 (50% equities, 40% bonds, 10% cash), when the equities bucket moves above 50%, that’s where you draw funds for living expenses and perhaps to top off the cash bucket. However, even that sounds fairly vague. And do you do this rebalancing monthly? Quarterly? Annually? Do you then run a new analysis each year, perhaps using the [Vanguard Nest Egg Calculator](https://retirementplans.vanguard.com/VGApp/pe/pubeducation/calculators/RetirementNestEggCalc.jsf), to keep assessing your portfolio’s longevity?

What’s in Your Buckets?

__This time of year, some folks struggle with a major decision on where to do their year-end giving. It’s especially difficult if you’re swamped with requests.__

The other day my husband Joel and I were talking about our giving this year. In December, we start asking the question, “have we met our giving goals? If we haven’t, what would we like to do with the remaining funds?”

We use a “giving portfolio” approach developed by [Jim Wise](https://www.bluetrust.com/advisor/jim-d-wise/),  a Certified Kingdom Advisor®, and it may be helpful to you, too.

__The categories on where to give are in Luke 4:16-19:__

*"And he [Jesus] came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.'"*

Jesus’ mission provides a model for establishing categories within a giving portfolio. To help us make decisions on where to direct our gifts, the first category is the ministry of __God's mercy__. It includes organizations that serve people who are in need, the poor and the imprisoned. This category also includes gifts to ministries that provide water, food, and shelter.

The second category is the ministry of __God's justice__ for people that have been oppressed–widows, orphans, the helpless, and the victims.

Then, the final category is the ministry of __God's Word__. FaithFi encourages you to do your giving first to the local church, and consider gifts to other evangelism and discipleship ministries.

You may be wondering why to consider your giving like a portfolio. A portfolio simply means that there are multiple buckets to set aside money with intended multiple purposes. When you combine multiple buckets with multiple purposes, it creates a portfolio. That's what your financial advisor does to help you structure your investment portfolio, but you can do that with your giving, too.

__God calls us each to give according to what we've been given. Where we choose to give around these categories can be done whether we have a widow's mite or millions to give. The portfolio idea still works.__

This portfolio giving concept helped us several years ago when we realized that our giving was missing gifts to widows and orphans. Where to Give

Morningstar is out with its eighth annual study of Health Savings Accounts and its top pick, Fidelity, remains firmly in the number one spot.

The study noted that as the availability of HSAs has grown, assets held in the accounts have grown and so has account quality. For example, fees have declined while investment options have expanded. However, it also pointed out that most accounts “pay paltry interest rates on savings account balances, even two years after rates began rising.”

The study examined 11 of the “top providers,” giving seven of them “above average” or better overall ratings. When it looked more specifically at how each account helps people 1) save for current health care expenses and 2) invest for future expenses, just four of the providers earned “above average” or better ratings on both dimensions. And only one, Fidelity, earned a “high” rating for both.

The study noted that Fidelity offers an interest rate of 2.69% on all savings account balances, far surpassing the other providers, none of which offer more than 1%. Fidelity also earned praise for not charging maintenance or other fees.

__In Acts 20:35, we find Paul encouraging the Ephesus elders to “Help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’” (ESV).__

In God’s economy giving is better than getting. What we provide for others is more significant than what we acquire for ourselves. The words of Jesus flip the world’s “me first” messaging on its head.

How does this work? How is handing out greater than taking in? Let’s look at sixteen different reasons why it truly is better to give than to get:

__1. When we give, we reflect God’s incredible generosity.__

Every good thing comes from God (James 1:17), including the unfathomable gift of Jesus. Our God is characterized by radical, undeserving generosity. And when we are generous, we reflect His incredible generosity.

__2. When we give, we loosen our grip on the material world.__

The Bible says we cannot serve both God and money (Matthew 6:24). When we give, our grip on the material world loosens and our grip on what is eternal tightens.

__3. When we give, we find greater contentment.__

While we regularly regret our purchases, we rarely regret our generosity. 1 Timothy 6:19 says when we give, we find “life that is truly life.” This means we experience the present blessings of following Christ, including contentment. The pursuit and acquiring of material gain only leaves someone wanting more. The pursuit of and acquiring of eternal gain leaves someone content.

__4. When we give, we store up eternal treasures.__

Matthew 6:19-20 says generosity is an eternal investment that we will one day enjoy. While momentary luster of worldly treasures rapidly deteriorates and vanishes, eternal treasures will remain.

__5. When we give, we experience happiness.__

Several studies demonstrate individuals’ giving increases happiness. Experientially, most of us can relate. Generosity has a way of producing joy while hoarding often breeds discontentment. This is why you rarely find a miserable, generous person, but we all know a miserable, stingy person.

__6. When we give, we are less stressed.__

In 1 Timothy 6:17, Timothy is charged to tell the wealthy not to put their hope in the uncertainty of riches. When our hope literally fluctuates with the ups and downs of the stock market, we will inevitably find ourselves stressed. Giving demonstrates we find our hope, not in an investment account, but in the steadfast love of God. And when our hope is sure, our stress is reduced.

__7. When we give, we participate in life change.__

God doesn’t need our generosity to fulfill His mission. Yet, He invites us to participate in what He is doing in our community and around the world. When we give, God multiplies the gift to mend broken marriages, feed the hungry, and care for the poor. We when give, God allows us to be a part of life change.

__8. When we give, we demonstrate an understanding of God’s grace on our lives.__

In Luke 8:1-3, we find three women who experienced something miraculous. Their response was to follow Jesus and generously support His earthly ministry. They gave in response to God’s grace in their lives. Such should be the response of every Christian, the ones who experience the miracle of being brought from death to life.

__9. When we give, we showcase the love of God to others.__

In a world consumed with a “me first” mentality, people take notice of biblical generosity. Biblical generosity is undeserved generosity, and it showcases the love of God to those in our community.

__10. When we give, we are given opportunities to share the gospel.__

We give because God gave, and we want others to receive God’s gift as well. Recipients of generosity are often open to hearing about the motivation behind such an act. For believers, this provides the perfect opportunity to tell about the greatest gift ever given—Jesus.

__11. When we give, we encourage others to live generously.__

Generosity spurs on generosity. As others see our generosity, they are often motivated to live generously as well. A generosity movement that impacts an entire community and beyond can start with just a few individuals stepping out and living generously.

__12. When we give, we are following God’s instructions.__

The Bible tells us to give. Proverbs 3:9 tells us we are to give our first and our best. Over and over, we see Scripture instructing us to hold loosely the things of this world and store up treasures in heaven. Giving is an act of obedience to God’s calling on our lives.

__13. When we give, our hearts become more infatuated with God’s church and its mission.__

Matthew 6:21 tells us our heart follows our treasure. When we give to the church and other Kingdom-advancing initiatives, our heart becomes tied to God’s work. We pay more attention to it. We care more about it. And we want to be a part of it more.

__14. When we give, God recognizes the sacrifice more than the amount.__

In God’s economy, amount sacrificed always supersedes amount given. Jesus identified the widow who gave only two coins as the one who gave the most (Luke 21:1-4). Biblical generosity is sacrificial generosity (2 Samuel 24:24). God cares more about what your heart has kept at home than what you place in the offering plate.

__15. When we give, we demonstrate our trust in God in a tangible way.__

Hoarding resources demonstrates a trust in ourselves—we can take care of ourselves better than God can.  Conversely, biblical generosity is an act of trust in God. We give our first and our best, trusting God will do as He says—provide for our needs.

__16. When we give, our confidence in God’s promises grows.__

Malachi 3:10 says God will pour out blessings on the generous. Proverbs 3:9-10 provides a similar promise. 2 Corinthians 9:8-12 says we will be made rich in every way. The promises tied to Biblical generosity are numerous. God blesses, whether physically or spiritually, those who give generously. As we give, God will make good on his promises, and our confidence in His promises will grow.

__3. Serve God, Not Money__

<p>One of my favorite passages in the Bible is found in Luke 12:16-21, the Parable of the Rich Fool. While most of us don’t have barns today, Jesus’ warning about storing up earthly treasures is just as relevant now as it was then. So, what does it mean to be <i>“rich toward God,”</i> and why does it matter? Let’s dive into this powerful lesson.</p><p>The parable begins with a wealthy man who has a problem many might envy—his land has produced so much that his barns aren’t big enough to store it all. His solution? Tear down the old barns and build bigger ones. He says to himself, <i>“Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry”</i> (Luke 12:19).</p><p>At first glance, this sounds practical, even responsible. But Jesus reveals the man’s tragic mistake. God calls him a <i>“fool”</i> because his life will end that very night, and all his possessions will be left behind. Jesus concludes with a warning: <i>“So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God”</i> (Luke 12:21).</p><h3>What Does It Mean to Be Rich Toward God?</h3><p><i>“Rich toward God”</i> is a striking phrase, and while Scripture doesn’t define it explicitly, we can infer its meaning through contrast. The Rich Fool’s mistake wasn’t his wealth but his heart. He prioritized his possessions over God, finding his security and satisfaction in material abundance rather than in his Creator.</p><p>Being rich toward God means:</p><ol><li><strong>Acknowledge God as Your Source</strong> – Recognize that all you have belongs to Him.</li><li><strong>Treasure God Above All</strong> – Count Him as your greatest riches, above money or possessions.</li><li><strong>Use Wealth for God’s Glory</strong> – Invest in His Kingdom by giving generously to those in need.</li></ol><p>Had the Rich Fool done this, his wealth could have been a tool for eternal good instead of a trap for his soul.</p><p>The story of the Rich Fool reminds me of <i>A Christmas Carol</i> by Charles Dickens. Like the Rich Fool, Ebenezer Scrooge was consumed by wealth and self-interest. But Scrooge was given a second chance to change—and so are we.</p><p>Jesus teaches that the way we use money is evidence of our faith. While works don’t save us, they reflect our relationship with God. Holding onto wealth for ourselves reveals a heart that treasures possessions more than the Giver of all good things.</p><h3>Money as a Tool, Not a Treasure</h3><p>It’s important to note that money itself isn’t bad. It’s a powerful tool that can be used for good or bad, depending on how we handle it.</p><p>The danger lies in letting money take God’s place in our hearts. As Jesus warns in Matthew 6:21, <i>“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”</i> The Rich Fool’s failure wasn’t his wealth but his attitude. Instead of viewing his abundance as a gift from God, he saw it as an opportunity for personal indulgence.</p><p>Imagine if the Rich Fool had responded differently. What if, instead of building bigger barns, he prayed, <i>“God, this is all Yours. You have made my fields prosper. Show me how to use this blessing to glorify You and help others”?</i></p><p>He might have used his wealth to feed the hungry, clothe the poor, or support God’s work. He could have shared in the joy of giving and discovered that, as Jesus said in Acts 20:35, <i>“It is more blessed to give than to receive.”</i></p><h3>Lessons for Us Today</h3><p>The Parable of the Rich Fool is a sobering reminder to examine our own hearts. Are we building bigger barns, accumulating wealth for our own comfort? Or are we using God’s blessings to invest in eternal treasures?</p><p>Here’s how we can strive to be rich toward God:</p><ol><li><strong>Trust in God’s Provision</strong> – Avoid placing your security in money.</li><li><strong>Give Generously</strong> – Use your resources to bless others and advance God’s Kingdom.</li><li><strong>Focus on Eternity</strong> – Remember that worldly wealth is temporary, but treasures in heaven last forever.</li></ol><p>The Rich Fool learned his lesson too late, but we don’t have to. <p>As Christmas draws near, stories of generosity and the spirit of giving abound. Few stories, however, embody these virtues more powerfully than the life of Saint Nicholas. Behind the modern image of Santa Claus lies the legacy of a man whose life reflected the true meaning of Christmas—selfless love and sacrificial giving.</p><p>Born around 280 A.D. in Patara, Turkey, Nicholas was raised in a wealthy Christian family. From an early age, he was taught to care for the poor and live out the teachings of Jesus. His parents modeled these values daily, planting seeds of faith and generosity in his heart.</p><p>Tragedy struck early in Nicholas’ life when an epidemic claimed both of his parents. Left orphaned but with a significant inheritance, Nicholas could have chosen to live in comfort. Instead, he embraced his faith, seeing his wealth as a tool to serve others and spread the love of Christ.</p><h3>The Secret Acts of Kindness</h3><p>Nicholas became known for using his wealth to quietly help those in need. His most famous act of generosity involved a poor man with three daughters who were unable to marry due to their lack of dowries. Without this financial gift, the daughters faced the grim prospect of slavery.</p><p>Moved by their plight, Nicholas secretly delivered a bag of gold to the family under the cover of night. He repeated this act twice more, ensuring all three daughters had a future free from poverty. When his identity was discovered, Nicholas humbly redirected the thanks to God, embodying Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6: <i>“When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”</i></p><h3>A Life of Service</h3><p>Nicholas later became the Bishop of Myra, a role that allowed him to extend his mission of compassion and justice. Known for his love for the poor and his courage in defending the innocent, he risked imprisonment during the persecution of Christians and stood firm for the gospel at the Council of Nicaea.</p><p>His life was defined by Christlike love. Through his actions, he reminded people that true wealth is not found in material possessions but in a personal relationship with God. His kindness pointed others to the greatest gift of all: Jesus Christ, who came to bring salvation and eternal life.</p><p>After Nicholas’ death on December 6th, 343 A.D., stories of his generosity spread across centuries. He became a symbol of selfless giving and was honored as the protector of children and the patron of sailors. Over time, his legacy inspired the modern figure of Santa Claus.</p><p>But beyond the red suit and cheerful laughter lies the heart of Saint Nicholas’ story—a life lived to glorify God through love and generosity.</p><h3>The True Meaning of Christmas</h3><p>The story of Saint Nicholas challenges us to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. His life reminds us that the season isn’t about extravagant gifts or seeking recognition. It’s about embodying the love of Christ—a love that is sacrificial, humble, and freely given.</p><p>As we exchange presents and celebrate with loved ones, let’s remember that the greatest gift has already been given. <p>We sometimes regret the things we say, but often, words left unsaid can bother us just as much.</p><p>We’ve all had the thought, <i>“Oh, I wish I’d said this or that.”</i> You had more to say, but for whatever reason, time ran out. Whether through unexpected interruptions or shifting circumstances, we often find ourselves in the middle of conversations that feel unresolved. These <i>“unfinished”</i> moments can leave us longing for closure or clarity, especially when circumstances prevent us from completing the dialogue.</p><p>Unfinished conversations can be deeply personal. A sudden change at work, a shift in a relationship, or even an unexpected goodbye can leave us wishing we had said more—expressing gratitude, offering encouragement, or simply saying, <i>“I appreciate you.”</i> Unresolved words can linger in our hearts, creating a sense of loss that extends beyond the situation itself.</p><h3>Reclaiming Conversations and Relationships</h3><p>Some unfinished conversations need to be revisited. Reaching out to express what was left unsaid can bring healing to others and ourselves. Even after the fact, a kind word or a heartfelt message can be a powerful way to rebuild relationships and bring closure to unresolved moments.</p><p>Sometimes, all it takes is a simple step to bridge the gap. For example, an email or a phone call that begins with, <i>“I didn’t get a chance to tell you this, but…” </i>can make a lasting impact. Thoughtful, intentional communication can transform lingering regrets into meaningful resolutions.</p><h3>When Conversations Can’t Be Reclaimed</h3><p>Of course, not every conversation can be recaptured. Death, distance, or circumstances may make it impossible to say the words we long to say. When faced with these situations, we can take comfort in surrendering those conversations to God.</p><p>A meaningful practice for releasing unresolved conversations is to journal them as prayers. Writing down the words we wish we could say and giving them to God can bring peace and closure. As we do this, we can trust that God finishes what we cannot. Just as Jesus declared on the cross, <i>“It is finished,”</i> we can rest in knowing He brings completion to even the most challenging parts of our lives.</p><h3>Applying This to Finances</h3><p>Unfinished conversations don’t just affect relationships—they often spill over into how we handle finances.
